The leaders from Quest and the King Scholar Program met at the Egan Leadership Center at Spalding University.Following the hour-long reception, Tori Murden-McClure presented a mesmerizing presentation on some of the elements of leadership. The presentation began with an exciting video clip from Inside Edition, documenting portions of Tori’s first attempt to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a rowboat. During that attempt, she encountered a hurricane that produced 70-foot waves. Time and again her rowboat was capsized until she was finally compelled to defer her dream.Although disappointed and injured, her resolve remained---she would cross the Atlantic. After the necessary planning and preparation, Tori began a second attempt. This time, for 85 days without the benefit of sail or motor, she rowed 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean and became the first woman to ever do so.
Tori Murden-McClure is a woman of wisdom and courage. She shared three powerful lessons on how we might become effective leaders. First, life’s most important challenges are not on the oceans or mountaintops, but are daily presented to us in our every day lives. She challenged us to fulfill our dreams by helping others.Second, true success always requires us “to reduce the gap between potential and performance.”The more narrow the gap, the more successful we are. Third, leaders must always persevere. With time and effort everything is possible, even the impossible---“the impossible just takes longer.”
