                                       Vocabulary

Are you committed to success? Would you like to dramatically improve your reading comprehension, excel in high school and significantly increase your chances to earn a college scholarship? Methodically expanding your vocabulary will help you succeed more than any other academic endeavor! Unfortunately, most students study vocabulary in a way that is boring and ineffective --- and that is why studying vocabulary is so universally hated.

Memorizing a list of unrelated words is an ineffective use of our time, because we quickly forget the majority of what we have memorized. Do you need proof?  How many words have you memorized over the past 8 school years? How many do you still know? Don’t you wish you knew a majority of the words you memorized in the past? There are three important steps in mastering vocabulary. If you follow the suggestions below, from now on you will remember 90% of all the new words you learn!  It is as easy as 1, 2, 3!

The first step to success is placing the new vocabulary words within a cohesive group of words. A cohesive group is one where all the words relate to a common theme or subject.  Second, as you start to learn about the word, try your best to relate the word to something you already know. If it is a noun (person, place or thing) can you picture it in your mind? Be sure to review the word’s synonyms because it is likely you already know one of them. The third essential component is repetition! Research confirms that to indelible imprint a new word in your mind you must review it 20 times!  Ordinarily, this would be time consuming and boring but not now!

Now we can combine these three effective steps of expanding our vocabulary with a new tool, a computer program entitled, “Ultimate Vocabulary”.  With it and the three vocabulary learning techniques described above, you will be able to learn far many more words in the same amount of time --- and remember them! These techniques will permit you to “anchor” the word to your existing knowledge. In this manner the new word will “stick” in your memory.

Below are 60 cohesive units of vocabulary words. Most units are designed to be learned in one week. These units consist of approximately 20 words. There are a four units consisting of approximately 40 words which can easily be learned in two weeks. The average student will master 40 units per year. Including the new synonyms and antonyms you will learn with each unit, most students will master approximately 1,000 words each year! This is twice the number of vocabulary words the average student learns during a year --- and that doesn’t count the words learned in school!  However, like all good things, this will require effort. You must commit to giving your best effort for 30 minutes per day, six days per week.
