Summer Enrichment is the first step of becoming a King Scholar. It is designed for advancing 8th grade girls who aspire to be King Scholars. Existing King Scholars advancing to the 9th and 10th grades also attend. Beginning in mid-June for a period of three weeks, the program is conducted at Sacred Heart Academy Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Girls selected to attend Summer Enrichment are introduced to exciting ideas, people and places. They learn the art of introducing people, proper telephone etiquette, helpful interviewing skills and how to effectively speak in public. After completing the summer program they are able to go anywhere, be with anyone, and conduct themselves with elegance. Because the girls are preparing for a successful high school career, Summer Enrichment also includes intensive vocabulary building. In fact, in three weeks each student learns 200 words essential to academic success. Although fun and designed to bring out the best in all participants, Summer Enrichment is demanding.
Just Before Air Time At WAVE TV
Summer Enrichment participants also learn the importance of proper nutrition, skin care and the application of age appropriate make up. Many times these lessons culminate in a public appearance on WAVE-TV. Pictured below are some of the girls who have participated in the "Teen Style Show".

Expanding Our Knowledge Of The World
It is important to learn about the world in which we live. During Summer Enrichment there are field trips to exciting places. We also hear from informative guest speakers, including successful judges, lawyers, doctors, nurses, teachers and business people. Additionally, King Scholars presently attending college share strategies they have found successful.
The Judicial Center
Each summer we visit the Jefferson Judicial Center. Here the Summer Enrichment participants learn about the many opportunities available in a career of law. They learn the roles of judges, prosecutors and defense counsel. Each participant also learns what she must do to academically prepare herself for such a career. The photograph to the right shows the Summer Enrichment participants meeting with Judge Barry Willett of the Jefferson Circuit Court.

The University of Louisville Dental School
Opportunities abound in all professional areas. To introduce the Summer Enrichment participants to the field of dentistry, we visit the University of Louisville School of Dentistry.
Have you ever wondered how dentists are trained? Sure dental students have to read and study a lot, but how do they get their "hands on", practical training? The Summer Enrichment participants join dental students and clinical faculty in the Simulation Lab to see how! Each participant gets to try her "hand" by operating dental hand instruments! Each learns how to use the high and low speed drill just like beginning dental students!

Balance
During Summer Enrichment we learn the importance of having balance in our lives. Throughout the summer we combine hard work with fun.
What Holds Us Back?
What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.
Ralph Waldo Emerson
Did you ever wonder what limits most people from achieving their dreams? Do you think the major limitation is based upon gender, race or a lack of education, money or health? No! The most serious limitation people suffer from is self-imposed! Most people are afraid and allow that fear to determine their actions. They are afraid to break out of their comfort zone, afraid to fail and afraid they will look silly. As a result, they play it safe and live unfulfilled lives focusing on "what could have been" and miss much of the challenge, reward and joy life offers.
Can I do This?
What? Did I hear you say that you don't have confining limits on your comfort zone? Really! Then answer this question: if you were placed in a harness and promised that you would be safe, would you climb unassisted up a 25-foot telephone pole and jump off? Below are photographs of girls who had the courage to "expand their comfort zones".
